How to read it
Every Friday the CFTC publishes who held what in US futures as of Tuesday. "Non-commercial" traders are the large speculators - funds trading for profit rather than hedging a business - and their net position (longs minus shorts, in contracts) is the market's cleanest public record of speculative conviction. Rising net length means speculators are accumulating; extremes in either direction show a crowded trade.
The 3-year COT index rescales today's net position between the 3-year low (0%) and high (100%). Readings near the edges flag positioning that is stretched by recent standards - historically more interesting as contrarian context than as a trade signal, since crowded trades can stay crowded for months. The data is also three days old on arrival and covers futures only, not options or cash positions.
Method and limitations
Net positioning = non-commercial longs − non-commercial shorts, from the CFTC legacy futures-only report, per contract, full available history. The COT index is (net − 3y min) ÷ (3y max − 3y min). Fetched on a schedule by our server and cached; your visit never queries the CFTC directly. Futures-only: options and spread positions are excluded, and reports lag the Tuesday snapshot by three days.
